MAGELLAN DNA

"When genetics shapes 25 years of an export career"

My story does not begin in a classroom or an office. It starts in a schoolyard, where a child with Moebius syndrome learns a lesson that management textbooks will never teach: when you cannot be the strongest — or the fastest — you have to become strategic.

This genetic adversity forged in me three competencies that would come to define my career in international business:

Connecting with others. Understanding, observing, decoding the unspoken. When your face cannot express every emotion, you must develop relational intelligence. The ability to read people, to adapt to cultural codes, to build trust despite barriers: it was already there, forged in childhood adversity.

Resisting frustration. Holding steady in the face of uncertainty. Never giving up. Tenacity is not a word — it is a muscle. And the 25 years I spent negotiating contracts in Asia, structuring distribution networks, and managing logistics crises proved that I had built that muscle long before my first client meeting.

Pursuing excellence. Turning that unwanted DNA loyalty card into a springboard. If I could not rely on appearance or social ease, I had to rely on irreproachable competence. Graduating top of my class from Grenoble École de Management, I built my career in B2B export for European industrial groups generating 80 to 98% of their revenue internationally.

25 Years
on the Silk Roads

From Lyon to Shanghai, from industres to business schools, my career spans three universes:

^
1999 - 2023

The Exporter

ERAMET, Ugitech, Cogne. High-end metallurgy, aeronautics, energy, medical. Greater China Sales Director, Asia-Pacific Export Manager (€20M → €50M revenue), Asia Commercial Director (€50M → €100M revenue), then Export Director. 4 years of expatriation in China (including Hong Kong). Management of multicultural teams (up to 15 people, 7 nationalities).

2004 -

The Asian

First trip to China in 2004. I married a Chinese woman in 2009. This is not an anecdote — it is a total immersion into the culture that would become my professional playground. Understanding guanxi (关系, relationships), Chinese strategic patience, the relationship with time and with people: none of this can be learned from books — it must be lived. By the way, my Chinese  name is 张飞龙 — literally, Flying Dragon ZHANG...

As for Japan, it has been my intellectual lighthouse. Their philosophy of detail, excellence, and service; their relationship with respect and collective dignity — all of this has profoundly shaped my vision of international business and, by extension, my teaching.

SINCE 2024

The Coach

From this career, two things stayed with me as the most rewarding: the unlikely and exotic encounters — always an intellectual challenge — and the privilege of having recruited five young people whom I trained, mentored, and promoted. Founding MAGELLAN DNA was obvious.

MAGELLAN DNA

Why MAGELLAN? Because my journey is living proof that our genetic constraints do not define us — they reveal us. Moebius syndrome did not prevent me from succeeding internationally. It gave me the tools to excel.

If you’ve made it this far, you now know a bit more about who I am. The real question is: is there anything I can do for you?
